Catedràtic de Lingüística General a la Universitat de Barcelona. Ha estat professor visitant a algunes universitats estrangeres com Amsterdam, Lyon, Berkeley o Roma. La majoria dels seus assaigs - sobre semiòtica, lingüística, filosofia, i, sobretot, teoria de la comunicació - es mouen entre la investigació i la divulgació: Lingüística i qüestió nacional (3i4, 1979), Premi Joan Fuster d’assaig, Signes, llengua i cultura (Edicions 62, 1980), Elogi de la passió pura, (Planeta, 1990), Premi Ramon Llull, Comprendre la comunicació: el llibre del sexe, la poesia i l’empresa (Proa, 1999), El regal de la comunicació (Ara Llibres, 2003), o L’instint de la seducció (Ara Llibres, 2005), entre d’altres. El 1974 va obtenir el Premi Anagrama d’assaig amb Elementos de lingüística matemàtica. Els secrets de la felicitat (Ara Llibres, 2006) és el seu darrer llibre.

Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Allgemeine Linguistik an der Universität Barcelona mit Gastvorträgen an verschiedenen ausländischen Universitäten wie Amsterdam, Lyon, Berkeley und Rom. Der Großteil seiner Sachtexte - er schreibt über Semiotik, Linguistik, Philosophie und vor allem Kommunikationstheorie - sind einerseits auf das Fachpublikum und andrerseits auf die breite Masse ausgerichtet: So z.B. Linguistik und nationale Fragen (3i4, 1979), ausgezeichnet mit dem Joan-Fuster-Sachbuchpreis, Zeichen, Sprache und Kultur (Edicions 62, 1980), Eloge der reinen Leidenschaft (Planeta, 1990), für das er den Ramon-Llull-Preis erhielt, Kommunikation verstehen: Das Buch von Sexualität, Poesie und Firmen (Proa, 1999), Kommunikation, ein Geschenk (Ara Llibres, 2003) und Verführungsinstinkt (Ara Llibres, 2005). 1974 erhielt er den Anagrama-Preis für Sachtexte für Elemente der mathematischen Linguistik. Geheimnisse zum Glücklich sein (Ara Llibres, 2006) ist sein jüngstes Buch.

Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Barcelona. Sebastià Serrano has been a visiting professor at a number of international universities such as those of Amsterdam, Lyon, Berkeley and Rome. The majority of his essays – concerning semiotics, linguistics, philosophy, and, above all, communication theory – are partly research works and partly informational pieces targeted for the wider public. In 1974 he received the Anagrama Prize for the essay with Elements of Mathematic Linguistics. His latest book is The Secrets of Happiness (Ara Llibres, 2006).
