Escriptor i editor. Llicenciat en dret, acabà la guerra civil amb el grau de comandant de l’exèrcit republicà. Exiliat el 1939, residí la major part del temps a Mèxic, on publicà amb Ferran de Pol i altres intel·lectuals catalans Quaderns de l’Exili i edità, amb estudis i anotacions, clàssics catalans com L’Atlàntida o Canigó, així com joves poetes com, les Poesies de Màrius Torres, de qui anys més tard en publicaria la correspondència, Cartes a Màrius Torres (1976). A la tornada a Barcelona, l’any 1948, es dedicà a tasques editorials. Va ajudar a crear, dins de l’editorial Club editor, una de les grans col·leccions de literatura “El Club dels Novel·listes” i d’aquesta època es conserva una interessant correspondència amb autors com M. Rodoreda o L. Villalonga. Com a escriptor va publicar el recull de poemes Viatge d’un moribund (1952), un veritable retrat moral i un profund testimoniatge líric de l’autor que preludia la temàtica i les qualitats de la seva gran novel·la Incerta glòria, de la qual es publicà una primera edició incompleta el 1956 i dotze anys després la definitiva, tres vegades més extensa. Èpica i dramàtica, potent d’imaginació i de recursos narratius, és la novel·la més representativa de tota una generació.

Schriftsteller und Verleger. Seines Zeichens Jurist, beendete er den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg mit dem Grad eines Kommandanten im Republikanischen Heer. Seit 1939 im Exil, verbrachte er die meiste Zeit in Mexiko, wo er zusammen mit Ferran de Pol und anderen katalanischen Intellektuellen die Quaderns de l’Exili, Exilhefte, herausgab. Desweiteren veröffentlichte er kommentierte Ausgaben katalanischer Klassiker wie Die Atlantida oder Die Canigo-Region, sowie die Werke junger Dichter wie Gedichte von Màrius Torres, und Jahre später unter dem Titel Briefwechsel mit Màrius Torres (1976) auch die Korrespondenz mit ihm. Bei seiner Rückkehr nach Barcelona im Jahr 1948 widmete er sich Verlagsarbeiten. Er trug im Rahmen des Verlages Club Editor zum Aufbau einer der großen Literaturkollektionen bei: “Der Club der Romanciers”; aus dieser Lebensphase sind desweiteren einige interessante Briefwechsel mit Autoren wie M. Rodoreda oder L. Villalonga erhalten. An eigenen Texten veröffentlichte er den Gedichtband Reise eines Sterbenden (1952), ein moralisches Portrait und ein tiefgreifendes lyrisches Dokument des Autors, das die Thematik und die Merkmale seines großen Romans, Ungewisser Ruhm, vorwegnahm. Dessen erste, recht unvollständige Ausgabe erschien 1956, zwölf Jahre später dann die überarbeitete Ausgabe von dreifachem Umfang. Episch und dramatisch, phantasievoll und gespickt mit erzählerischen Elementen ist es der repräsentativste Roman einer ganzen Generation.

Writer and publisher. Joan Sales had a degree in law and by the end of the Civil War had earned the rank of Commander in the Republican army. He went into exile in 1939 and lived for the majority of that time in Mexico. There he published, along with Ferran de Pol and other Catalan intellectuals, Notebooks from Exile and also edited, in scholarly editions, Catalan literary classics such as Atlantis and Canigó as well as the work of young poets such as Poesies by Màrius Torres, whose correspondences he also collected years later in Letters to Màrius Torres (1976). Upon returning to Barcelona in 1948, Sales dedicated himself to the task of publishing. He co-founded, under the publishing house Club editor, one of the great literary collections, El Club dels Novel.listes, and from this period a wealth of correspondence with authors such as M. Rodoreda and L. Villalonga has been preserved. As a writer he published a collection of poems Voyage of a Dying Man (1952), a genuine moral portrait and profound lyric testimony of the author, as well as a work that preludes the themes and great quality of his masterpiece, Uncertain Glory, a novel first published, in a far from finished form, in 1956. It would be twelve years later that the definitive version, three times the size of the first, would be published. Epic, dramatic, imaginatively charged within a narrative framework, it is the most representative novel of its generation.
