Escriptora i professora universitària de Filologia Hispànica i directora de la Càtedra José A. Goytisolo, de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Comença la seva carrera literària el 1974 amb el volum de narrativa curta Te deix, amor, la mar com a penyora. La seva primera novel·la, Una primavera per a Domenico Guarini (Edicions 62, 1980) va guanyar el premi Prudenci Bertrana i l’any 1989 va obtenir el Premi Ramon Llull per Joc de miralls (Planeta, 1989). Però va ser Dins el darrer blau (Destino, 1994), una novel·la històrica que narra el procés que van patir els jueus conversos mallorquins, que la va acabar de consolidar com una de les veus amb més força del panorama literari català. L’any següent recollia el Premio Nacional de Narrativa, 1995, que per primera vegada es concedia a una novel·la en català. Entre els seus assaigs destaquen La escuela de Barcelona (1988), premi Anagrama o La obra poética de Carlos Barral (Edicions 62,1990). L’any 2000 publica Cap al cel obert i el 2004 rep el Premi Sant Jordi amb La meitat de l’ànima (Proa, 2004), una història on l’escriptora demanarà ajut al lector per aclarir-ne l’entrellat. Dos anys més tard publica L’estiu de l’anglès (Proa, 2006), un divertimento d’humor i intriga que narra les peripècies d’una dona durant un curs intensiu d’anglès. És Creu Sant Jordi, 2000.

Ihre literarische Karriere begann 1974 mit dem Kurzgeschichtenband Und lass als Pfand, mein Liebling, dir das Meer. Ihr erster Roman, Florentinischer Frühling (Edicions 62, 1980) gewann den Prudenci-Bertrana-Preis und 1989 erhielt sie den Ramon-Llull-Preis für Im Spiel der Spiegel (Planeta, 1989). Es war jedoch Ins fernste Blau (Destino, 1994), ein historischer Roman, der die Geschichte der konvertierten Juden auf Mallorca erzählt, der sie als eine der wichtigsten Stimmen des katalanischen Literatur-Panoramas bestätigte. Im darauf folgenden Jahr, 1995, erhielt sie den spanischen Nationalpreis für Erzähkunst, der zum ersten Mal an einen Roman auf Katalanisch ging. Unter ihren Sachbüchern sind Die Schule von Barcelona (1988), Preis Anagrama, oder Das poetische Werk von Carlos Barral (Edicions 62, 1990), hervorzuheben. 2000 veröffentlichte sie In den offenen Himmel und 2004 erhielt sie den Sant-Jordi-Preis mit Die Hälfte der Seele (Proa, 2004), einer Geschichte, wo sie den Leser um Mithilfe bei der Auflösung eines Verwirrspiels bittet. Zwei Jahre später kam ihr Buch Der Sommer des Engländers (Proa, 2006) heraus, ein Divertimento voll Humor und Intrigen, das die Erlebnisse einer Frau in einem Englisch-Intensiv-Kurs erzählt. Carme Riera wurde im Jahr 2000 für ihre Verdienste mit dem Sant-Jordi-Kreuz ausgezeichnet.

Carme Riera began her literary career in 1974 with I Leave you Love, the Sea as my Token, a volume of short stories. Her first novel, A Spring for Domenico Guarini (Edicions 62, 1980) won the Prudenci Bertana Prize and in 1989 she won the Ramon Llull Prize for Mirror Images (Planeta, 1989). But it was In the Blue Beyond (Destino, 1994), an historical novel that narrates the suffering of converted jews from Mallorca, that brought her to prominence as one of the most powerful voices in the panorama of Catalan literature. The following year she won the National Prize for Narrative 1995, which for the first time was given to a novel written in Catalan. Notable among her essays are The Barcelona School (1988), winner of the Anagrama Prize, and The Poetic Work of Carlos Barral (Edicions 62, 1990). In 2000 she published Towards the Open Sky and in 2004 she received the Sant Jordi Prize with Half of the Soul (Proa, 2004), a history in which the writer asks for the help of the reader in order to solve the mystery. Two years later she published The Summer of English (Proa, 2006), a divertimento of humor and intrigue that narrates the vicissitudes of one woman during an intensive English course. She received the Creu Sant Jordi 2000.
